Weaving slowly

The Derung are a minority people based in the Yunna province in southwestern China. In 2015, Beijing Contemporary Art Foundation and the fashion brand Klee Klee initiated the project Naze Naze, with the intention of protecting, developing and showcasing their weaving tradition and the work of Derung women. In the Derung language, Naze naze brao means “weaving slowly”.

Author and journalist Yimin Mao will teach us about the Derung people, their weaving tradition and the Naze naze project, in conversation with political sociologist Yunyun Zhou. Mao will be participating live from China.

This event is a collaboration with Northing, founded by architect Ben Wenhou Yu and designer Yilei Wang. It is a multi-functional cultural space for publication, design, cultural events and cross-cultural communication. With its base in Bergen and its roots in China, Northing aims to showcase Norwegian culture among artists and designers in Asia, and vice versa.

The event will be in English.
