Sand in the machinery. Talk by John Erik Riley

What happens to our relationship with photographs when they are taken for posting on the web in an eternal now, rather than to preserve a moment for posterity? And what then happens to our relationship with our own history?

Taking well-known theorists such as Susan Sontag, W G Sebald and John Berger as his starting point, Riley addresses the difference between images before and now. He looks at what has been lost and what we must try to preserve.

His talk finds inspiration in everything from Eugène Atget’s classic photographs of empty Parisian streets to his own journeys in the American desert, where he has sought to refine his vision. How can we recover our relationship with the camera? Can it remain a tool for thinking and help us to see in a different way?

The event will be in Norwegian.
