In Jente 1983, we meet a woman who finds her life, and the outside world, developing fractures. At the same time, she delves into suppressed memories and seeks to understand the girl she was at 16. Along cross-cutting lines drawn through time and place, the reader also gains an insight into how this youngster thought and what she experienced of abuse, shame and desire.

Linn Ullmann says that she has tried to write this book for many years, but was unable to do so before now. What allowed her to get this done? Has the writing process been upsetting?
