Cross-generation conversation IV: Faithful or free? (digital)

The stricter infection control measures adopted by the Norwegian authorities for the Bergen region from 7-14 February mean that LitFestBergen must cancel all physical events. All ticket purchases for physical events will be refunded. This event will be streamed to YouTube.

Views on translation have changed over the years. Roughly speaking, they have fluctuated between the extremes of “faithful” and “free”. The faithful translation lies closest to the original text, while the free is more tailored to the language and culture it is to function in.

No ideological paradigm shift has perhaps occurred over less than a generation, the time which separates the translation debuts of Toril Hanssen and Preben Jordal in 1988 and 2007 respectively. But have the technical changes in society had any effect on the way translating is done today compared with 40 years ago? And how far do a translator’s ideals change over  time? Hansen and Jordal discuss translation before and now with critic and translator Margunn Vikingstad.

In collaboration with The Norwegian Association of Literary Translators (NO)

This event will be in Norwegian.
