Toril Hanssen

Toril Hanssen (b 1946, Norway) is a translator from British and American English as well as Swedish and Danish.

She has worked in the department of English at the University of Bergen, specialising in American literature, and had study/research residencies at Berkeley University and Radcliffe College/Harvard.

Her translations include Hjemkomsten and Forsvinningens anatomi by Hisham Matar, and the Patrick Flanery novels Tilgivelse and Det falne landet.

Non-fiction works she has translated include Et forsvar for kvinnens rettigheter by Mary Wollstonecraft (1792, in Norwegian 2003).

She is on the western Norway board of Norwegian PEN and presents the Translation programme at the Bergen House of Literature with Eirik Ulltang Birkeland.
