Mutabaruka

Mutabaruka (b 1952, Jamaica) is a dub poet, social commentator and musician.

Born Allan Hope, he converted from Catholicism to Rastafarianism as a teenager. He was educated in electronics for four years and then worked for the Jamaican Telephone Company until 1971. Mutabaruka’s first musical release was Check it in 1983 and his latest Life and Lessons was released in 2009.

In 2007, he taught African-American studies at Merritt College in California and has lectured and performed at many places in Jamaica and around the world. For his tremendous work in the field of arts, Mutabaruka was honoured by the National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD) and the Rotaract Club of Mandeville, Jamaica.
