Poetry captivating millions
Hissa Hilal from Saudi Arabia became world-famous as the first woman ever to reach the final of Million’s Poet, a TV programme based in Abu Dhabi. This talent contest, where participants read their own poetry, has been described as the Middle East’s response to Pop Idol/American Idol and has drawn tens of millions of people to their TV screens.
Hilal meets James E Montgomery, author, translator and professor of Arabic at Cambridge University, for a discussion on traditional Arabic poetry and its role in Arab society and popular culture.
The conversation will be held in English.
