Truth in Free Fall
Truth, lies and love are at the centre of Swedish author Johannes Anyuru's novel Ixelles (translated into Norwegian by Håvard Syvertsen), which received rave reviews when it was published in Norwegian in 2024. The main character, Ruth, comes across a CD on which her boyfriend, who died twelve years earlier, speaks as if he is still alive. Wasn't he stabbed in the pedestrian tunnel after all?
Ixelles is a thriller and science fiction but perhaps first and foremost a contemporary novel about alienation, gang crime, class divisions, drugs and loss of identity. The book is also an existential drama that explores what happens to a society when lies and manipulation become a political force. Truth and lies are also at the centre of Anyuru's newest book, Faktan (Factual), in which Anyuru has poetically translated Palestinian poems and writes about South Africa's genocide accusation against Israel.
Meet Anyuru in conversation with author and editor Priya Bains about truth, lies and fiction as a political tool.
This event will be in Swedish and Norwegian.
