Ghosts in Norwegian Colonial History
How does Norway look from the perspective of fiction writers who carry traces of Norway's colonial history?
In the critically acclaimed novel Halvt (Half), Marjam Idriss tells the story of Inge, who is travelling to the Caribbean with colleagues from Equinor. Inge's mother is herself from the island of St Croix, which was once a colony in the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway. Her encounter with the island evokes memories and stories of colonisation and slavery. In her Brage Prize-winning novel Sameproblemet (The Sámi Problem), Kathrine Nedrejord explores what it means to be a mother, daughter and grandchild in the light of Sámi culture, language and identity. In the book, Nedrejord takes issue with the Norwegian state, the church, schools and Norway's racist legacy towards the Sámi population.
Meet the two authors in a conversation about having diverse cultural backgrounds, Norwegian colonial history and family history. The conversation will be led by festival director Teresa Grøtan.
The conversation is in Norwegian with simultaneous translation into English.
