Feminist Horror

Since its beginnings, the horror genre has been used as a vehicle for exploring the more uncomfortable parts of the human psyche and experience, including those of the marginalized female.

What better vehicle than horror to break the taboo of speaking of the female body, its functions, and indeed the female experience? Recent years have seen growing interest in a sub-genre termed “femgore” that uses the medium of horror in precisely this manner.

Shaking off the concept of demure femininity, femgore instead pushes explorations of the female experience into darker and more explicit territory.

The critically acclaimed short-story collection Cursed Bunny by South Korean author Bora Chung explores the female experience through the lens of horror and science fiction.

In conversation with science fiction and fantasy author Vibeke Koehler, Chung will speak of her use of genres horror, science fiction, and dystopia to address feminist concerns.

The event will be held in English.
