Against Contemporary Western Beauty Standards

Faced with the constant barrage of touched-up visages and airbrushed bodies in social media and the regular press, how do women today combat negative body image and shake off consumerism’s pressure to live up to this elusive beauty ideal?

Would reverting to historical cultural wisdom and practices serve women better and enable them to acknowledge their own inherent beauty?

In her book Decolonising My Body, Afua Hirsch takes a personal journey into her own cultural identity and explores customs regarding beauty and femininity.

Hirsch will speak to Kari Jegerstedt, head of the Centre for Women’s and Gender Research at the University of Bergen, about the journey she describes in her book.

The event will be held in English.
