About Nils-Aslak Valkeapää and the book Helsing frå sameland

Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (1943-2001) published his first book, Helsing frå sameland (Greetings from Sámiland, translated to Norwegian from Finnish by Liv Hatle) in 1971. The essence of nature, the mindset of indigenous peoples and their understanding of the world are the focal point of the writing and art of Valkeapää, who is the only Sámi author to have received the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1991. 

While working on her own Brage Prize-winning novel Sameproblemet (The Sámi Problem), author Kathrine Nedrejord read this 50-year-old book. In this talk, she will discuss Valkeapää's book, cultural views, criticism of the majority society and what distinguishes Sápmi in the 1970s from Sápmi today.
